What Is A Mnemonic Device For Remembering Names?
Everyone values their names. A person’s name can be comparable to a treasure or a property cherished. So when someone you are already acquainted with forgets your name, it can be insulting. But what if it is you who have no recollection of people’s names? How do you deal with it?
At the very instant where you are faced with the person, you may make an excuse like asking for their contact number so they can type in their name on your phone. In case it was already there before, you can pretend that it was deleted. But is that all you got?
There are actually ways by which you can recall names. Some can associate names with faces. Others can remember based on where they have a common ground. These include a mutual friend, work, family or relative, hang out and so on. But the use of mnemonics is always the best option.
Mnemonics refers to a technique used in remembering based on association. There are various types of mnemonic devices or methods used for remembering things. These include acronym, rhymes, alliteration, groupings of words or phrases, numbers, images, and verses whether a poem or a song.
To remember names, the mnemonic device which can be applied is alliteration. This refers to the repetition of a specific sound in words or phrases. In this case, a name can be easily recalled through by repeating a syllable in a person’s name. Public activities for school, work, etc. sometimes ask participants to write their name with a corresponding description starting with the first letter of their name. Examples would be “marvelous Martha,” “friendly Fred,” and so on. It makes it easier of other attendees to remember the person’s name with the alliteration done.
Another method can be imagery. This is done by associating a person’s name with a related image such as famous celebrities and characters on T.V. or film. An example can be associating the name Marilyn with an image of Marilyn Monroe.
These are just some of the mnemonic devices which can be applied so you can remember names better. You can also come up with your own unique technique.
